I grew up with a lot of fears. There was a dog in my neighborhood, a beautiful white Samoyed named Adak, that gets the spotlight as my very earliest memory. My mother says I was 1 when Adak knocked me over on the sidewalk in front of our house. I can still kind of see it in my mind. I was afraid of dogs. My other big fear was of criminals. Because of the beautiful view from our hilltop home, my parents decided not to have any curtains!
So many nights I was concerned enough about robbers that after I was done laying awake with my face hidden under the covers, I would dream of flashlights shining in through those bedroom windows.
I’m so thankful to testify that when I came to know Jesus for myself, He delivered me from that fearfulness. I feel secure no matter what in the loving and powerful arms of my Savior.
Do I ever find myself afraid of anything? Oh yes, sometimes a situation will arise that sparks fear, but it is thankfully temporary. Psalm 56:3-4 says, “When I am afraid . . . ,” yes, David says, “When,” not “if.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?”
When you are afraid, don’t beat yourself up for some lack of faith; let that fear remind you to turn in childlike to the One who is perfectly trustworthy. He will hold you and help you. |
